Recycling In Nanaimo

City of Nanaimo Refuse Collection and Recycling Program

Weekly curbside garbage collection is provided to single family residences within the City of Nanaimo. If you require to put out more than one garbage can, or one garbage bag, you may purchase additional tags for $2 per bag.

You are allowed to put out one refuse container weekly and unlimited recycling material every second week. The familiar yellow recycling bags are available from any City of Nanaimo facility. This would include City Hall, Bowen Park, Beban Park and the City Works Yard on Labieux Road. Further information is available at 758-5222.

You may also visit the City of Nanaimo website for more information on Garbage Collection by using this Nanaimo Garbage Info LINK.

Condominiums and apartment buildings will have their own way of dealing with refuse removal and recycling, some have on premises recycling others leave that to the individual to take their recycle material to a center on their own.

You can also dispose of yard waste at this center as well as computers and other used electronics. There is a charge for yard waste but computers and electronics are free of charge.

Drywall can also be recycled here for with there is a tipping fee of $235.00 per metric tonne.

Additionally if you have clothing, books, magazines, toys or small electronics in good working condition they can be donated to the Community Market Thrift Store at the same location.

Plans are in the works for curbside compost collection, visit their website for more details.

More information is available from the NRE website by using this NRE LINK .

Bottle Depot

You can return basically any bottle, can, juice carton, tetra pack or jug on which you paid a deposit to the Return It Center at 4151 Mostart Rd. Unit #4, Phone 751-2358. They also had a second location at Terminal Park which is no longer open. Of  course you may also return any container to the merchant from whom you purchased it for a full refund of your deposit. For example any container Save On Foods collects a deposit on, can be returned to them for a full refund.

The Bottle Depot will take ALL containers on which a deposit has been paid including liguor and wine bottles. The disadvantage of course can be long waits if someone in front of you has a million bottles because they are returning the proceeds from a bottle drive.
